Victorian society Essay The Importance of Being Earnest, subtitled, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People is a comedy of manners whereby Oscar Wilde rebukes the Victorian aristocracy for their social issues that seemingly prioritise the most trivial of things such as style and appearance above those of true significance such as. Wilde further achieves this by incorporating elements such as farce and melodrama in order to highlight their senseless main concerns. Wilde portrays the act of ââ¬Å"Being Earnestâ⬠as being in opposing to its definition as having features of dishonesty and false morality, with one of the main characters Algernon stating that ââ¬Å"The truth is rarely pure and never simpleâ⬠. Wildeââ¬â¢s first satirical attack in the play is marriage. Algernon is shown to perceive marriage to be a business deal as opposed to the projected illusion of it as described in the play as being based on mutual feelings of love (evidence ââ¬â Ceclily or Gwendolen). This is evidenced by Algernonââ¬â¢s sharply comical and paradoxical epigrams in response to his best friend Jack Worthingââ¬â¢s admittance of wanting to propose to Algernonââ¬â¢s own ward Gwendolen he states: ââ¬Å"I thought you had come up for pleasure? I call that business. â⬠Wilde is seemingly satirising concept of marriage presenting it to be a legal contract between consenting families of similar social class and fortunes; Baxley comments ââ¬Å"Wilde shows us how the upper class does not marry for love or happiness but for convenience and social standingâ⬠. )Algernon views marriage in an unorthodox way, unlike the expectations of modern day now. He views it as a disease, one that to be bearable needs an escape: ââ¬Å"Nothing will induce me to part with Bunbury, and if you ever get marriedâ⬠¦ you will be very glad to know Bunbury. A man who marries without knowing Bunbury has a very tedious time of it. â⬠ââ¬ËBunburyââ¬â¢ (who is he) is a direct metaphor for Algernonââ¬â¢s deceit and escape from social expectation. He is a fictitious person; one that Algernon suggests is needed in general life but indeed emphasises that this is the case most particularly when one is married. Algernon disregards Jackââ¬â¢s confidence that once he finds love he will no longer needs a ââ¬ËBunburyââ¬â¢[a]. On one level the exchange merely is a continuation of the long running marriage gag of the Victorian notion of ââ¬Å"marriage blissâ⬠in an era where the English aristocracy was dominant and superior, and far removed even from the British middle class. This would in turn amplify the humorous situation through Wildeââ¬â¢s blatant social criticism-through the ââ¬ËBunburyââ¬â¢ double entendre to the middle class audience in particular. Nevertheless, it also brings to light a darker subtext, one were Algernon insinuates that all husbands in Victorian society have and need a ââ¬ËBunburyââ¬â¢ thus satirising the moral values by highlighting the fact that aristocratic meaning as long as they kept within the appearance of propriety, they could lead a double life and avoid responsibility but still keep upmost respect from society. Consequently, Oscar Wilde satirises duty and respectability simultaneously with the notion of marriage in Victorian society by demeaning their importance. Wilde could be said to be suggesting that their ââ¬Ëdutyââ¬â¢ is a pun (with reference to the title of the play) and in fact the aristocracy duty is more so simply a title that entails a need for pity as opposed to awe. Perhaps this is purposely done as such a suggestion to a Victorian audience would have been deemed an outrageous concept even to the extent of offence but is accepted due to the comedic light-heartedness and infantile manner in which it is presented; through Algernonââ¬â¢s unrealistic approach to life and love. His ignorance and foolishness, contributes to the satirical nature of the play but yet in keeping with the comedy genre due to the melodramatic and foolish aspects of his character for example: ââ¬Å"She will place me next Mary Farquhar, who always flirts with her husband across the dinner-table. That is not very pleasant The amount of women in London who flirt with their own husbands is perfectly scandalous. It looks so bad. It is simply washing oneââ¬â¢s clean linen in publicâ⬠. This statement highlights the fact that Algernon recoils at the very thing that society values. His offence that the women he will be seated with flirt only with their husband and no one else evidences this. The importance of marriage instead is subverted and can be seen as simply a stipulation and social expectation that comes with the responsibilities of being in the upper class a view, which is seen as trivial and unimportant as the characters mainly view marriage as a social tool.

Biological Terrorism I. CATASTROPHIC TERRORISM The date is April 24, 2005. The time is approximately 8:30 am. Somewhere on the New York City subway system a briefcase sits, apparently forgotten. Inside the briefcase, an electronic oscillator flips over, marking the passage of thirtieth minute since its owner abdicated. In the busy subway station no one notices the small hissing noise that is produced as an odorless, tasteless aerosol is slowly released into the air. Within minutes, the pathogen contained in the gas has spread throughout the station, and New York has unwittingly played host to the first recorded incidence of bioterrorism. The first symptoms appear nearly a week later. At first, victims believe they are suffering from the flu, but symptoms quickly progress from fever, rigors and headache to severe chest pain, irregular heartbeat and pustular eruptions. In the absence of treatment, nearly all those infected die within two weeks of the onset of symptoms. 1 Could this really happen? In the above case, glanders (Burkholderia mallei), a pathogen which normally strikes horses and mules, is released by a terroristic individual or group. Glanders was specifically chosen because of its virulence, high mortality rate, stability in aerosol, and ease of cultivation. When symptomatic individuals first arrive, accurate diagnosis will be unlikely; glanders is extremely rare in humans, and it is unlikely that medical personnel will have experience with the disease. Further complicating diagnosis, the pathogen does not appear in blood cultures until the victim is near death. Motivational Leadership Essay
Effective leadership has a tremendous impact on the success of an organization. Darling & Heller (2011) infers that ââ¬Å"with regard to individuals in leadership roles, their thoughts and feelings, fundamentally based on attitudes, thereby also control the levels of organizational success and every other aspect of an organizational leaderââ¬â¢s arena of endeavorâ⬠(p. 9). Achieving optimal organizational performance is very much so dependent on the effectiveness of that organizationââ¬â¢s leaders. Five topics interrelated to leadership effectiveness will be addressed in this paper. (1) Feedback works for leadership and tell why you think it could be beneficial. (2) Present an overview of the Contingency Theory of Leadership effectiveness to include Situational Leadership II. (3) Share some ways that you as a leader could lead your company in being socially responsible and creating an ethical organization. (4) Provide a brief analysis of empowerment; be certain to include the relationship between delegation and empowerment. (5) Discuss how leaders can foster teamwork within a group. All of these topics and/or concepts are essential aspects to achieving high levels of quality, roductivity and satisfaction within an organization. The concept of 360-degree Feedback is to formally evaluate an organizationââ¬â¢s leaders through feedback from individuals that work closely with those leaders (e. g. subordinates, colleagues, direct supervisors, other superiors, suppliers and/or customers). According to Dubrin (2010), 360-degree Feedback is also referred to as multisource or multirater feedback, and is systematically derived from a full sampling of parties who directly interact with the leader (p. 110). One particular method for organizations to easure leadership effectiveness through the 360-degree Feedback concept is to set up a system utilizing the internet or the organizationââ¬â¢s intranet. That system should be based on the attributes that organization deems to be the most significant and valuable. The 360-degree Feedback is of great benefit to leaders in providing them insight into the effectiveness of their behaviors and styles. The feedback mainly serves for developmental purposes (behaviors, attitudes, and styles), and not for the purposes of evaluating the leaderââ¬â¢s performances. The 360-degree Feedback not only benefits the ndividual leaders, but it also is a vital component to the organization, as a whole. Organizations benefit from 360-degree feedback instrument in the following ways: (a) individual performance improvement, (b) impact on business goals, and (c) impact on organizational culture (Rehbine-Zentis, 2007, p. 160). The Contingency Theory of Leadership is the assumption that a leaderââ¬â¢s ability to lead is contingently based on various situational factors, internally and externally. The following are various factors that could greatly influence a leaderââ¬â¢s effectiveness within heir organization: the capabilities of the workforce, the culture within the organization, and the competiveness of market. Leaders who are have been highly effective within one organization, may not deliver that same effectiveness within a different organization. An important perspective on implementing contingency leadership is that the leader must be flexible enough to avoid adhering to old ideas that no longer fit the current circumstances or situation (Dubrin, 2010, p. 133). I can definitely see the validity of the theory in reference to my own experiences in previous leadership positions. It is absolutely about he ability to successfully and effectively adapt to different organizational environments. Like the Contingency Theory of Leadership, the Situational Leadership II style is a contingency leadership approach that is solely based on the theory that there is no one particular best style of leadership that fits all situations. This leadership style focuses mainly on the capabilities or behaviors of individuals and/or groups that one leads. Blanchard (1997) asserts, ââ¬Å"Situational Leadership II advocates that the best leaders provide the amount and kind of direction and support which best fits the developmental evel of the employeeâ⬠(p. 38). As a leader, I can encourage my organization to focus on ethical business practices and social responsibility, beyond profit pursuit, based upon our strategic organizational goals, mission and vision statements. I would initially ensure that the organizationââ¬â¢s environment was a positive, engaging culture conducive to intellectual development. Individuals within an organization invest about one-third of their time at work, a pleasant work environment increases the chances that their life will be enriched (Dubrin, 2010, p. 181). There would be a significance placed on competing fairly and onestly, not causing harm to others (internally/externally), and communicating truthfully. I would ensure that my organization is offering goods and services that are valuable and essential to consumers. We would be consistent in providing quality employment to individuals which would benefit them in providing for their families, in the forms of, paying them salaries/wages, offering quality health insurance and/or child care services, matching retirement plan contributions, etc. We would also benefit society in maintaining ethical practices in our financial obligations through paying taxes which elps fund education, support government, build highways, as well as provide funds to enhance our local, state and national public safety/defense systems. According to Forsyth (1997), ââ¬Å"genuine changes to business practices have to be made in order to protect the environmentâ⬠(p. 272). I would ensure that, as an organization, we were utilizing the most up-to-date technology and economic solutions to reduce or alleviate any environmental issues that we faced. My organization would take every possible precaution to not generate unnecessary waste and pollution through the improper onsumption of resources, as well as from the possible emission of toxic air pollutants caused by our manufacturing processes. The concept of empowerment involves a power transfer from higher levels of employees to lower levels of employees within an organization (Khalid & Sarwar, 2011). Leaders that utilize positive empowering practices with their employees are more likely to increase their organizationââ¬â¢s productivity. When employees are given the opportunity to share in the responsibilities of their leaders and/or managers, they feel more powerful and valued. Empowerment is also advantageous to an organization, in respect to owering labor costs through the sharing of those managerial responsibilities with its lower-level employees. According to Dubrin (2010), leaders can promote empowerment within their organization through fostering initiatives and employee responsibility, linking work activities to the organizationââ¬â¢s strategic goals, providing ample information to their employees, and by allowing group member or individual employees to choose their preferred method for meeting a goal (p. 205-206). One contributing factor to empowerment is the act of delegation which is more of a formal ssignment of tasks and responsibilities. Delegation, as well as, empowerment can be a very motivational tool which offers individuals the benefit of skill development. The bottom line is that both concepts represent the core principle of accountability. Teamwork is vital to an organizationââ¬â¢s success. Being that teams consist of individuals with different backgrounds, beliefs, ideas and points of view, it is imperative that we always be respectful and embrace the rewards that diversity brings within the team. As leaders, we can foster teamwork within a group through providing team embers with clear descriptions of the teamââ¬â¢s goals, mission and tasks, commanding performance commitment and excellence, providing direction and feedback, alleviating micromanagement practices, forming virtual teams utilizing e-leadership, and encouraging power sharing which ensures that each team member is being heard, taken seriously and treated respectfully (Dubrin, 2010). More importantly, encouraging teamwork and utilizing teams are essential in increasing an organizationââ¬â¢s productivity and achieving cohesiveness throughout the organization. A leaderââ¬â¢s ability to build ffective teams committed to organizational goals tops the list of priorities in todays dynamic business landscape (ââ¬Å"Work at fostering teamwork on the job,â⬠2011). Teams can produce higher-quality solutions, as well as foster creativity and positive energy. Effective teams are capable of being more adept at solving difficult, complex problems than that of the organizationââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"top-performingâ⬠individuals. Creating teams can also cause an increase in commitment, lower stress levels, diminish internal-competiveness, and promote flexibility in responding to the organizationââ¬â¢s needs, in relation to, ââ¬Å"businessâ⬠changing.

Multicultural Education And Counseling Through The Arts...
I conducted this project based on the multicultural education and counseling through the arts program also known as MECA. A community program that is currently ââ¬Å"Creating a brighter future for Houston since 1977â⬠(ââ¬Å"Homepage-MECAâ⬠, 2015). MECA is a community-based non-profit organization committed to the healthy development of underserved youth and adults through arts and cultural programming, academic excellence, support services, and community building (ââ¬Å"Homepage-MECAâ⬠, 2015). This is because the company was well-performed at the time of Dominic Latino who was handling each and every activity in the right manner. Therefore, the root cause is related to the management. For this purpose, two techniques such as Total Quality Management (TQM) and Six Sigma are applied for reaching to the root cause of the issue (Kerzner, 2013). Six Sigma technique consists of two methods; DMADV and DMAIC for addressing the issue along with the implementation of the suitable strategy (Burke, 2013; Kwak and Anbari, 2006). According to the case study, Latino Engineering is facing issue related to product quality and development, owing to this, DMADV methodology can be applied. This methodology targets to improve the existing product development phase by proposing the new approach for the development (Snee, 2004). It would be effective to initiate newness in the company so as to grab the attention of customers by offering them new product as per their requirement (Meredith and Mantel Jr, 2011). On the other hand, DMAIC is the data-driven quality strategy which aids to improve the existing procedure for the purpose of maintaining good quality (Winter and et. al., 2006). This indicates that application of DMAIC approach is more suitable for Latino Engineering. The first step of the selected methodology is defining wherein customers are defined in the context of their quality issues and core business involved (Stevenson and Hojati, 2007). As per the current situation of the business, it has that customers require the quick response for the service quality, packaging and delivery aspect of the engineering equipment produced in the firm. Also, they want easy delivery and other effective procedure which facilitates to meet their requirement zero-defect. In this context, business will ensure that requirement of the customers is met effectively by offering the right kind of product and services on the given time span (De Mast and Lokkerbol, 2012). The second step of the selected methodology is the measurement in which data will be collected from the management/ customers of Latino Engineering. For example, information will be collected from the customers that what exactly is not going in the business. For example, the survey will be conducted regarding the quality, delivery and other related aspects of the engineering product with the purpose or goal of maintaining the good quality, increased customer satisfaction and retaining them for longer time span by providing them quick response (Antony and et. al., 2012). With the collected data, it has been found that there exists the gap between the expectation and actual performance of the business. Owing to this, appropriate action must be taken to improve the current situation. At this juncture, derived results will be compared with the actual situation of the business. It is helpful to bring out the suitable solution so as to determine the smooth flow of information and ensure th e betterment of the business for longer time span. In addition to this, analysis of the entire situation proves to be effective in identifying the root cause of the entire situation. The variation was identified that Latino Engineering is not able to meet the expectations of customers because the employees are not motivated. However, it is the fact that if employees are motivated then they tend to deliver good quality of services and ensure to accomplish the aims and objectives of the business (Frings and Grant, 2005). At this juncture, the major issue was related to the low level of motivation among employees. In this regard, a situation will be improved with the creation of an innovative solution that workforce will be provided monetary reward for their better performance. It will be assessed on the basis of monthly evaluation of their performance. However, the reward will be based on their contribution to increasing the customer satisfaction and providing quick response to them. Yet, the problem was related to production and packaging department so the quality department will be set that will provide the standard for the respective issues. At last, control will be done in accord with the continuous monitoring of the internal situation of the business. Total Quality Management (TQM) is another approach which is based on the customer-focused, total employee involvement and process-centred. Along with that, integrated system, continual improvement and fact-based decision-making are included which facilitates in bringing desired improvement (Kaynak, 2003). As per the situation of the Latino Engineering, employees are involved in the decision-making process who can provide their valuable suggestions to improve the service quality. On the other hand, a manufactured product will be based on the expectation of the customers. Also, the packaging department is monitored as per the set standard guidelines (Palo and Padhi, 2003). However, the continuous improvement will be brought through the training of employees in accordance with the issues which are being faced in the organization. (Sadikoglu and Zehir, 2010) With the application of Six Sigma and TQM approach, it has been found that major issue is related to the quality of product and services (Andersson, Eriksson and Torstensson, 2006). Furthermore, the crucial issue was related to lack of motivation among employees and poor supervision of the packing and production department. Owing to this, appropriate plan related to continuous improvement has been implemented in which root cause of the problem will be reduced to a great extent. At the same time, resources requirement will be assessed whereby corporation can effectively create its competitive edge in the marketplace through retention of personnel for longer time span. The plan has been proposed that first of all current situation of the Latino Engineering will be assessed and accordingly causes are identified. It has been found that employees should be provided training and continuous monitoring should be done for the quality department in the context of packing and manufacturing (Isa ksson, 2006). It is estimated that both of the mentioned activities require 12 days and it will be started at the end of the September month and end up in the first week of the October month. The overall analysis derived varied objective of the project plan; improving the service quality, customer satisfaction, zero defect products and higher quality of products and services. For this purpose, strategies such as continuous training, setting separate quality department which looks over the packing and manufacturing department as well as customer issue (Nahmias and Cheng, 2009). All the activities of this particular department will be reported to the head or management at the end of each working day. It will help management to assess the performance of the business. The strategy related to training, the quality department set up will be done as per the allotted time. At this juncture, monitoring will be done on the right time so the obstacles can be overcome. The project team will communicate the improvement efforts by conducting the weekly or daily meeting so that each one can get to know about the structured process associated with the plan. Apart from this, 5whys (refer appendix figure 3) will also be applied to understand the issues which are taking place in the company. For this purpose, first of management asses the abnormal conditions are prevailing in the company as the quality is declining. It is followed by the reason that management issues took place. In this regard, appropriate action should be taken to improve the quality. For example, necessary training and development activities of the employees and setting the quality culture in the business (Velaction Continous improvement, 2016). The project manager set the deadline for all task and employees according to their proficiency and in the same manner, monitoring will be done (Borkar, 2005). The issues identified during the monitoring process will be taken into account to modify the project. Lastly, management of the Latino Engineering will bear in mind regarding the exact practices to be followed to the lifetime of the organization. At this juncture, customers' survey will be conducted and continuous development of employees will be ensured. This facilitates to manufacture the zero-defect product and enable employees to work with integration. A project cannot be completed without employing necessary resources. The major resources are human resources, physical and financial that aid to complete all the project activities in an effectual manner. The financial resources are needed in conducting the training and setting the quality department. On the other hand, physical resources such as laptop, stationary and training hall are required which will be provided by either Latino Engineering or project management team (Kolisch and Hartmann, 2006). These physical resources play the crucial role as all the strategies are implemented by using these resources only. In addition to this, human resources such as entire project team, executive staff of Latino Engineering and its employees are crucial in accomplishing the targets in the right manner. Therefore, it is important for the business to employ all these resources for implementing the project plan and meeting the organizational requirement in the right manner. At the same time, continuous improvement will be brought into the plan whereby it will be possible for the business to retain the customers for longer time span. Further, extra resources will be employed to meet the contingency situation of the business. Developing a continuous improvement plan to ensure the problems and issues are not repeated According to the current study and aforementioned analysis, Latino Engineering will go through the continuous improvement plan. The activity table and Gantt chart of the plan are presented in the appendix which reflects that 51 days are needed for the completion of the project activities. The Gantt chart is prepared through which project manager can easily assign the task as per the deadline and resources can also be arranged in the same manner. The initiation of a project has been done at the end of the September month that will be last until December of the financial year 2017. In this manner, the overall situation of the business has been assessed that why the issue and occurring and what remedies can be provided for the effective solution of the same (Meyringer and Sap Aktiengesellschaft, 2006). The first two activities end up with the collection of data that management related issues should be resolved as it is the root cause of the problem and it will be followed by the stateme nt of the objectives. The standard objective of the project is reduced the customer dissatisfaction to a great level and meet their expectations by manufacturing zero defect product. In this regard, total 4 days were decided to set time frame for the bringing the suitable solution of the problem which is being occurred in the business. Furthermore, total 20 days are consumed in setting the strategies and implementing the same for addressing the issue. For example, training sessions were conducted with the manufacturing and packaging department along with the communication of the standard practices (Kumar, 2005). They were informed that quality department will pass on the guidelines and they have to abide by the same. It is not possible that all plans are completed in the successful manner as certain obstacles are faced in the management of the project. In this regard, project manager applied strategies to integrate personnel and provide them monetary and non-monetary rewards. This will help business in providing the right solution for the corporation and integrating all necessary resources so as to reach to the optimal solution (Fortune and White, 2006). However, communication is considered as the strongest tool for the successful completion of any project. For this purpose, daily or weekly meeting have been conducted to assess the progress of the project and let the employee know the potential issues. Therefore, varied activities are communicated to the management. The critical path method technique has been applied in the project so as to reduce the time taken in the project and cost involved in the same. The critical path method displayed in the appendix shows that major activities covered in the project are 1+2+3+4+5+7+9+11+12+13=31 days. It reflects that duration of the project is reduced by 20 days with the application of this method. It aids to complete the project in relatively less because two or more than two activities are completed simultaneously (Achanga and et. al., 2006). However, application of such kind of activities might require additional resources but time will be reduced to a great extent. This facilitates to improve the performance of the business on the right time. Therefore, critical path method helps project management team to accomplish the project before the same time and provide the overall benefit for the organization to create its competitive edge in the marketplace. Conclusion The aforementioned report concludes that application of suitable software tend to reduce the time taken in the completion of the project. For this purpose, critical path method and Gantt chart are effective which support management in completing the business activities in the right manner and deliver good quality of services to client. The continuous improvement plan of the Latino Engineering generates huge cost but the overall quality of services will be improved as each and every aspect is supervised under the plan of continuous development. Here, the important part of continuous development is employees involved n the product and service department of the business. However, it is important for management of Latino Engineering to conduct the audit skills of employees and assess the training need among employees. This will helpful for the workforce to understand the standards set by the business and works upon the same to derive the quality outcome.
