Lincoln Essay Example For Students

Lincoln Essay Abraham Lincoln, Honest Abe, is one of the greatest American Presidents. He is known today for his Presidency in which he fought the Confederacy duringthe Civil War and abolished slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation and laterthe Thirteenth Amendment. He was an intelligent, honest, and just leader whogoverned at a critical time in American history. PRE-PRESIDENCY Lincoln was bornon the twelfth of February 1809 in a cabin three miles outside of Hodgenville,Kentucky. He was later forced to move to Indiana. As a child Lincoln worked onhis familys farm clearing fields and tending crops. He liked to read butunfortunately received hardly any formal education. In fact, his entireschooling only amounted to about one year of attendance. (Brit. 23) In 1830Lincolns family moved to Illinois. Lincoln didnt want to be a farmer, sohe tried other professions: rail-splitter, flatboat man, storekeeper, postmaster, surveyor, an army man, and a profession in Law. In 1932 Lincoln, attwenty-three years old, decided to run for the Illinois State legislature. Lincoln was to campaign for local improvements such as better roads and canals. However, a war with the Indians broke out before Lincolns campaign could getgoing. In response, he joined the Army. After his short wartime, Lincolnreturned to politics and lost the race of Illinois Legislature. In 1834 he ranagain and was elected- second of thirteen. At the age of 25 Lincoln was a memberof the Illinois Legislature. After his term in the legislature, Lincoln found heneeded more money. So, he started studying law on his own. He accepted a job inSpringfield at John Todd Stuarts practice. In the late 1830s Lincoln foundthe love of his life, Mary Ann Todd, the daughter of a rich banker. She gotengaged to Abe in 1840 and the two were married in 1842. They had thee childrentogether, Willie and Tad Lincoln. In 1946 Lincoln won the Whig nomination for aseat in the House of Representatives for Illinois and sat in Congress in 1847. The major issues of the time were the Mexican-American war, which Lincolnopposed, and slavery. Lincoln was not an anti-slavery crusader. However, he didvote in Congress to stop it from spreading. Morally, Lincoln hated slavery andsaid slaver was founded on both injustice and bad policy. He wanted toabolish slavery over time because he thought dramatic actions to end slaverywould lead to violence. Lincoln felt that Congress should not interfere withslavery in states in which it already existed. After his term in Congress,Lincoln left politics again for a full time law practice. In the early 1850sSenator Stephen Douglas opened the issue of slavery in the territories of Kansasand Nebraska. In 1854, Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska act, allowing theissue of slavery in Kansas and Nebraska to be decided by popular sovereignty. Lincoln was thunderstruck and stunned. This act brought him back intopolitics. He felt obligated to speak out against the Kansas-Nebraska act. So,after Lincoln left law he traveled across Illinois campaigning for anti-slaveryWhigs. In his campaigning Lincoln called slavery a cancer and amonstrous injustice. He said he believed in the Declaration ofIndependence, which states all men are created equal. However, he wasntsure of what to do with slavery in the states where it already existed in. In1856, Lincoln switched from the Whig Party to the Republican Party because theWhigs were weak and could never unite against slavery. Lincoln felt that if hewanted to make a point he would have to be with a strong party. In 1858, Lincolnwon the Republican Nomination for the Illinois Senate seat. He wanted the seatof his long time rival, Senator Stephen Douglas. In Lincolns first speech forhis Senate campaign Lincoln said, I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half fr ee. Lincoln warned his opponents that thespread of slavery must be stopped or else it would become lawful in all thestates; old as well as new- north as well as south. In July of 1958, Lincolnchallenged Senator Douglas to a series of seven three-hour, public debates. Thousands of people showed up to watch the Little Giant (Douglas) vs. Long Abe. Douglas fought for white supremacy. He believed the country could endure halffree and half slave. Douglas said whites made this country therefore they shouldrun it. Lincoln wanted equality. During one debate Lincoln said: There is noreason in the world why the Negro is not entitled to all the natural rightsenumerated in the Declaration of Independence, the right of life, liberty andthe pursuit of happiness. I hold that he is as much entitled to these as thewhite man. In the end, Douglas won the Senate election by a hair. However,Lincoln did not give up. His debates with Douglas had made him famous acrossIllinois. Lincoln kept debating and got a lot of Republican support. Lincoln gotso much support that the Republicans felt he could win the presidentialelection. So, they tried to get him nominated. The Lincoln-Douglas debates wereincredibly crucial to Lincolns future career. It was this series of debatesthat made Lincoln well known throughout the country. In fact, Lincoln probablywoul d not have won the Presidential Election in 1860 if he hadnt debated withDouglas. Douglas was far better known than Lincoln was throughout the countryand in Illinois. At the Lincoln-Douglas debates people from miles around wouldcome to watch the two men speak in the remote towns of Illinois. Reporters fromaround the nation came and jotted down what the two men said. What was said atthe debates could be read in the newspapers of major cities the very next day. It was Lincoln-Douglas debates that first gave Lincoln nation wide publicity. Lincoln probably would not have ended up in the White House if it had not beenfor these debates. PRESIDENCY PRE-CIVIL-WAR At the Illinois RepublicanConvention in May 1860 Lincoln was chosen as the Republicans favoritePresidential Candidate. One week later at the National Republican Convention,Lincoln was nominated on the third ballot. Lincoln was running against twoDemocrats Stephen Douglas of Illinois, and John C. Breckenridge, a southernDemocrat from Kentucky. On Election DayNovember 6, 1860Lincoln won theelection with 1,866,000 votes. He carried every Northern State. Southernershated this black Republican and his name did not appear on any southernballots. Douglas got 1,377,000 votes and Breckenridge received 850,000. If theDemocratic Party had not split Lincoln would not have been elected. Douglas andBreckenridges votes combined were more than the total number of votes forLincoln. So, if Breckenridge hadnt run, almost all Democratic votes wouldhave gone to Douglas. I also believe , that if Douglas were elected, a civil warwould not have broken out. Douglas believed the nation could endure half-freehalf slave. He did not feel strongly about slavery. Unlike Lincoln, Douglas didnot care if slavery spread through America. If it werent for Lincoln slaverycould have spread into new states and territories. It was Lincolns boldnessagainst slavery that created nation wide freedom in America. As soon as Lincolnwas elected some southern states threatened to secede from the Union. The Southhated Lincoln. An Atlanta newspaper said, Let the consequences be what theymay the south will never submit such humiliation and degradation as theinauguration of Abraham Lincoln. And so, sure enough, in December, the slavestate South Carolina seceded from the Union. During the next three months beforeLincolns inauguration, seven more slave states seceded from the Union andformed the Confederate States of America with their capital in Richmond,Virginia. In February, Senator Jefferson D avis of Mississippi became thepresident of the Confederacy. On the 4th of March 1861, Lincoln was sworn intooffice. In his inaugural address Lincoln told the people he would not tamperwith slavery in the states where it already existed. I have no purpose, directly or indirectly to interfere with the institution of slavery in thestates where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have noinclination to do so. Little did the people know what Lincoln was going todo. He later said in his address In your the American people hands, mydissatisfied countrymen, and not mine is the momentous issue of civil war.Lincoln went on to say he would do everything he could to preserve, protect, and defend the Union. THE CIVIL WAR Lincoln believed the Union could be savedwithout any blood. However, On April 14, 1861 Fort Sumter, at the entrance tothe Charleston Harbor in South Carolina, was taken over by the Confederacy. Thelong Civil War had begun. The Union had claimed the loyalty o f 23 states, 22million people. It was had an industrial economy which could produce rifles, cannons, shoes and everything else an army might need quickly. One thing, however, which the factories could not produce was good generals. Throughoutmost of the Civil War this would be a constant problem. The Confederacy had 11states, 9 million people of which almost four million were slaves. Its economywas agricultural. Unlike the Union, the Confederacy held a monopoly ofmilitary talent. (LPB 73) Soldiers also knew the land on which the war wasfought and had acquired military skills from hunting. Lincoln decided he neededto keep other countries from helping the confederacy. So, he set up navalblockades in Confederate ports. Then, Lincoln launched three major offensives:One into Virginia, another into Tennessee, and a third to take control of theMississippi River. He gave General George B. McClellan control of easternarmies. McClellan trained his men very carefully but took a long time doing i t. Famous people with mental illnesses EssayGrant had been winning decisive victories. The day after the battle ofGettysburg, Grant had taken control of the last important Confederate strongholdon the Mississippi, Vicksburg. Early in 1864, Lincoln appointed Grant as thecommander in chief of all Union armies. Together, Lincoln and Grant came up witha master plan to finally beat the Rebels. They planned to launch coordinateoffensives against the Confederacy from all directions. In the East, Grant wouldattack Lee in Virginia, driving towards the rebel capital, Richmond. In the westGeneral Sherman would go from Tennessee into Georgia, capturing Atlanta whichwas, at the time, a crucial railway center for the rebels. From there, Shermanwould go towards Virginia, squeezing the Confederacy and eventually taking overtheir capital. Lincoln was hopeful. Grant is the first general I have had. You know how it has been with all the rest. They wanted me to be the general. Iam glad to find a man who can go ahead without me. In May 1864 the offensivebegan. Grant marched down to Virginia but was met my Lees newly rebuilt armyin a densely wooded area call the Wilderness. Grant fought three major battlesnear Richmond but still could not take the city. During Grants Wildernesscampaign roughly 54,000 Union soldiers were killed or wounded. Things werebetter for Sherman. After a long siege at Atlanta the city fell and wasevacuated. Shermans men then went into the city and destroyed everything thatcould be used by the South for war. Sherman then marched through Georgia ruiningeverything in his path: crops, houses, livestock etc. Meanwhile, Grant wasslowly taking hold of Richmond. By November the end of the war was in sight forthe Union. In the election of 1864 recent Union victories gave Lincoln muchsupport and sure enough, Lincoln was reelected on November 8, 1865. He had wonby almos t half a million votes out of some four million cast. Lincoln felt heshould now, after winning the election, push for a Constitutional Amendmentpermanently outlawing slavery everywhere in the United States. Lincoln pressuredanti-abolition Congressmen who apposed the amendment in the winter of 64. Finally, on January 31, 1865 Congress passed the 13th Amendment to theConstitution outlawing slavery within the United States, or any place subjectto their jurisdiction. On March 4, 1865 Lincoln was sworn into office. In hisaddress he denigrated slavery, calling it a hateful and evil practice. He saidthat now that slavery had been abolished it was time for healing. However,Lincoln said he did not feel malice towards Southerners. Even as Lincolnspoke, the Union victory machine was in action. Sherman marched up the coastcapturing the city of Savannah. Then, he moved up towards Virginia and on hisway captured Charleston, South Carolina. Then on April 2, after a long siege, the Confederate capital, Richmond, was evacuated and the Confederate governmentwas moved to their new capital in Danville, Virginia. The next day Union troopsmoved in to officially take control of the city. Then, on April 9, 1865 Lee andGrant met with their armies at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. There, Grantaccepte d Lees surrender. Lees men then lay down their weapons, thus, ending the long Civil War. The Civil War had lasted almost four years. More than600,000 United States men had died. Thats more than the total number of liveslost from every war the U.S has fought in combined. Neither side had expectedthe war to last as long as it did or for the war to put an end to slavery. Afterthe Civil War, many friends of President Lincoln were worried about the safetyof his life. He had been receiving threats of assassination in the mail andeveryone knew how much hate there was towards Lincoln, especially from theex-Confederates. So, bodyguards, cavalry escorts, and even troops camping out onthe White House lawn protected Lincoln as best they could. However, all theprecautions failed. On, the night of April 14, 1865 Lincoln and his wifeattended the theater. Then, in the third act John Wilkes Booth came into thePresidents box and shot Lincoln in the head. Doctors rushed to try and savethe wounded Presi dent. However, on the morning of April 15, 1865 Abraham Lincolndied in his bed at the age of 56. Lincolns funeral was held in the East Roomof the White House on April 19, 1865. After his funeral a long processioncarried the President to the Capital Building. On the 21st a funeral trainbrought Lincoln to his final resting-place in Springfield, Illinois. A GREATCOMMANDER WHO HANDLED SLAVERY WELL In the Civil War, Lincoln was a greatcommander. For most of the war he had trouble finding a good commander to run acampaign in the East. So, Lincoln was forced to almost single handedly head theUnion campaign in the East. Early in the war, Lincoln could rely on the goodstrategic advice of his general in chief, Winfield Scott. Scott had proposed theAnaconda Plan. In his plan, Scott wanted to blockade the Southern coastand take control of the Mississippi squeezing the Confederacy and isolating themcompletely. Lincoln agreed with his plan but wanted to go further. He wanted theUnion to take more of an offensive. So, he tightened the blockade and called formore troops. In this sense Lincoln was ruthless. Later, towards the end of thewar, Lincoln, with the help of General Grant devised the plan that crushed therebellion. Today, when we think of Lincoln, the fact that he was a goodcommander doesnt stand out in our minds. However, after carefully lookingover his bold, decisive actions in the Civil War I realized that he was indeed agreat commander. Lincoln handled slavery very well. Even though he was morallyagainst slavery he was careful in dealing with it. His handling of slavery suitsRoosevelts saying, Walk softly and carry a big stick. In the electionof 1860 Lincoln knew he had to have minimal enemies. So, as to not anger anypro-slavery voters Lincoln said he would not tamper with slavery in states inwhich it already existed. When Lincoln was inaugurated he said the same thing. He did this to try and keep America out of a Civil War. However, many slavestates felt they needed to expand slavery. In order to do so they needed to getout of Lincolns domain. Once slave states started seceding Lincoln knew hehad to crush the rebellion, but keep the border slave states loyal. So, Lincoln, once again, promised he would not take away their slavery. By doing this he kepta lot of Union support. Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation raised a lot ofanti-war feelings. Before announcing his plan he consulted politicians from theloyal slave states to make sure they approved. In his original plan Lincoln wasgoing to start emancipation in loyal states. However, after listening to theviews of a Kentucky Congressman Lincoln found that the border slave states wouldbe infuriated if they became free states. At that point, when Lincoln waswriting the Emancipation Proclamation, the Union was being beaten right and leftand could not afford to lose the loyalty of the border states. Throug hout thewar Lincoln had the support of Republicans. However, after the EmancipationProclamation was released many neutral and pro-war people became critical ofLincoln and the war. To control these Copperheads Lincoln declared martial lawin certain parts of the country. In this sense he carried a big stick. After Lincoln won the election of 1864 he decided it was time to push forwardwith emancipation. If his actions had been too strong before the election hewould have lost a lot of votes. So, that winter Lincoln started stronglypressing for the 13th Amendment, outlawing slavery permanently. Lincolnstiming for the amendment was impeccable. Also, to ensure two-thirds vote in thehouse, Lincoln asked an Ohio congressman to get three doubtful Democratic votesfor the 13th Amendment by bribing the doubtful voters with certain positions inoffice and other areas that Lincoln had influence over. The greatest thingLincoln ever did was handle slavery so well. He appeased the border states bynot t aking away slavery in their states and in that sense he walkedsoftly. He had to deal with the Copperheads with an iron fist and in thatsense Lincoln carried a big stick. In general Lincoln is an American herobut he is most famed and rightfully famed for the freeing of slaves. INCONCLUSION Lincoln was one of the best Presidents, if not the best, in Americanhistory. In his era, Lincoln was viewed by some as dictator and a tyrant. However, over time the American people have come to recognize and appreciatewhat Lincoln has done more and more to the extent of the Lincoln Memorial andhis face on Mount Rushmore. He governed the country at possibly the mostcritical time in the United States history, a time when the very existence ofAmerica was at stake. We were lucky to have Lincoln in office during that time. He has affected the world today more than any other man in that century. Hehandled slavery extremely well and was a great commander. His speaking abilityengrossed audiences throughout his career. He died because of what he believedin and he will never be forgotten. I personally, believe that Abraham Lincolnwas the finest President this country has ever had.

Of Mice And Men Lennies Worst Enemy Is His Own Strength Essays

Of Mice And Men: Lenni'es Worst Enemy Is His Own Strength Lennie Small is a gentle giant who possesses and almost superhuman strength that ultimately leads to tragedy. We first read about Lennie's great strength in the opening scene when he has killed, probably by accident, the pet mouse he has in his pocket. We learn that it is not the first time Lennie has killed pets. During the same scene, Steinbeck compares him to a bear and a horse, both strong animals. This imagery of Lennie as an animal continues. He is also compared to a terrier, indicating that he is a faithful and loyal companion to George. Steinbeck makes his characters pick up the animal references too. When George tells the boss that Lennie is: Strong as a ball, Lennie repeats the statement. The repetition has the effect of again giving the reader clues that Lennie's strength ill be significant to the development of the story. Steinbeck fully develops the animal comparison at the end by drawing a parallel between candy and his no longer useful old dog, and George as the master of the dog-like Lennie, who can no longer be useful after he has accidentally killed Curley's wife. All the other characters witness Lennie's strength sooner or later. George mentions it frequently, and Slim says: ? I never seen such a worker. He damn near killed his partner bukin' barley. There ain't nobody can keep up with him. God almighty, I never seen such a strong guy. Demonstrations of Lennie's strength continue with details of the incident in Weed when Lennie is accused of assaulting a girl, which we do not witness, the mangling of Curley's first, and the accidental killing of both the puppy and Curley's wife. There are times with Lennie's strength is a positive advantage, however, and, if harnessed appropriately, which George attempts to do as much as he can, it is a virtue. As long as Lennie keeps quiet at interviews and lets George do the talking, he makes and excellent impression as a worker and probably contributes greatly to ensuring that the pair continue to find work during a period of very high unemployment during the Great Depressions. He is also able to defend himself, which George calls upon him to do when Curley attacks him for no real reason. Sadly, this could be a useful attribute to have in places where many unhappy men are cooped up together with few opportunities to take a break from each other. The problem of Lennie's strength, therefore, is his lack of ability to control it, and it is important not to overlook that Lennie's brutal actions are never intentional. As Slim notices: He ain't mean. I can see Lennie ain't a bit mean. And as Lennie says to George: I don't want no trouble? Don't let him sock me, George. Lennie's endearing qualities and lack of aggression are never better demonstrated than when George tells Lennie that should Curley try to fight him, he should let 'im have it, and Lennie replies: 'Let 'im have what, George?' If Lennie had Curley's mean temperament, he really would be dangerous. Only when the dream of living off the fat of the land seems realizable does Lennie show and signs of aggression. Even then, the objects of his anger are imaginary cats that could threaten imaginary rabbits. Lennie's lack of control over his own strength would probably be limited to the harm he innocently inflicts on his pets if he lived and worked in more sympathetic surroundings but the ranch is a hostile place, full of desperate characters where inequalities of power and property are very apparent and exploited. If Curley and his father, the boss, were kinder and if Curley treated his wife with the respect he should have shown toward her, the tragic conclusion would not have occurred. English Essays

How does Shakespeare show the changing relationship between Juliet and her parents in Act 3 Scene 5 Essay Example

How does Shakespeare show the changing relationship between Juliet and her parents in Act 3 Scene 5 Essay Example How does Shakespeare show the changing relationship between Juliet and her parents in Act 3 Scene 5 Paper How does Shakespeare show the changing relationship between Juliet and her parents in Act 3 Scene 5 Paper Juliets relationship with her father at the beginning of the play was not a normal relationship between a father and a daughter in that period of time. Usually there was conflict between father and daughter as in many societies daughters were considered to be regarded as property, to be given marriage to the most suitable man who offers. Lord Capulet is not like this at the beginning of the play, he tells Paris that he considers Juliet to be far too young for marriage and that she is still a child. He asks him for her to have two more summers as a child left before marriage. He is very concerned that many young brides die from childbirth because they have married and had children far too early. But saying oer what I have said before:My child is yet a stranger in the world; She hath not seen the change of fourteen years;Let two more summers wither in their prideEre we may think her ripe to be a bride. However, Juliets relationship with her mother is totally different. Lady Capulet has ob viously never spent much time with Juliet and a prime example of this is when she goes to talk to Juliet about the noble Paris wanting to marry to her. In Act 1 Scene 3 Lady Capulet sends the nurse out but then when she realises that it would not be as easy as she thought it might be recalls her into the room so as to help her if she could not cope on her own. She also knows that Juliet and the Nurse have a much closer relationship than they do because the Nurse has been looking after Juliet for all of Juliets life. She was her wet-nurse and breast fed her when she was a baby. The Nurse has looked after her since. The language between Juliet and her mother is very formal; Madam, I am here. What is your will? This is the matter. Nurse, give leave a while; We must talk in secret. (NURSE begins to leave)Nurse, come back again;I have remembered me, thous hear our counsel.Thou knowst my daughters of a pretty age.At the beginning of the scene the atmosphere is tense as Romeo has only just l eft Juliets bed chambers. Before Lady Capulet enters her room, Juliet expresses her surprise at her mothers visit.Who is it that calls? It is my lady mother. Is she not down so late, or up so early? What unaccustomed cause procures her hither? This suggests that Lady Capulet does not naturally come to see her. It also suggests that there is a large distance between Juliet and her mother. The word unaccustomed tell us that Lady Capulets visit is strange and that it only happens rarely. Lady Capulet uses formal and blunt language which shows no affection. Even when Lady Capulet finds that Juliet is crying she is insensitive and uncaring. She tells her that she should stop this nonsense and get on with it. She expresses that no good can be done by all of this crying and that Tybalt will not be brought back by whatever she does. Therefore, have done. Whilst Juliet and her mother are having a conversation about Tybalts death and the villain that killed him, Juliet uses lots of double meanin gs and soliloquys to the audience. The word Villain is repeated over by both Juliet and Lady Capulet. Lady Capulet says it with the meaning of it being the person (Romeo) who killed Tybalt. However, Juliet is using this as a double meaning, so her mother hears what she wants to hear, but the truth is being spoken, just secretly. Lady Capulet continues all the way through the scene in a crisp and businesslike manner. She is very sure that they will get revenge on Romeo over what he did to Tybalt. There is irony and a shadow on the future when she speaks sometimes. That he shall keep Tybalt Company: when Lady Capulet is telling Juliet about the marriage that has been arranged she refers to her as her child.Marry, my child, early next Thursday morn,The gallant, young and noble gentleman,The County Paris, at Saint Peters church,Shall make thee a joyful bride. She warns Juliet that he will not be at all pleased and thinks that she knows how he will react. Lady Capulet tells Lord Capulet th e news grudgingly and she knows what his response will be. She lets him know that she disapproves. I would the fool were married to her grave! this is irony. Lady Capulets parting words to Juliet after Juliet has pleaded with her are orders and demands and she disowns her like Lord Capulet. Talk not to me, for Ill not speak a word: Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee. She confirms what Lord Capulet says. Shakespeare manipulates the audiences reaction to Juliet throughout this exchange is how Juliet kept talking to the audience as well as the characters on stage. And because the audience have more insight than most of the characters, their reaction is more sympathetic towards Juliet.Lord Capulet is in a good mood when he enters Juliets room. At first he sets a picture of a good day. The air doth drizzle dew. But when he realizes that Juliet is upset he automatically thinks that she is crying over her cousins death. He is concerned, but even though trying to comfort her, his ge neral message is to get on with it. He refers to Juliet as a small ship sailing on a stormy sea and that she cannot take it.How now, a conduit, girl? What, still in tears?Evermore showering? In one little bodyThou counterfeits a bark, a sea, a wind; For still thy eyes, which I may call the sea,Do ebb and flow with tears; the bark thy body is,Sailing in this salt flood; the winds thy sighs,Who raging with tears and they with them,Without a sudden calm will oversetThy tempest-tossed body. This mood is short lived as his tone changes abruptly. How now, wife! Have you deliverd to her our decree? This language is now very businesslike and to the point like Lady Capulets language. The word decree says that they have already decided and that it cannot be changed. Once Lady Capulet has told her husband that Juliet refuses to marry Paris lord Capulet expressive his disbelief, but it quickly turns into anger. He uses a series of rhetorical questions and repetition that expresses his disbelief.S oft, take me with you, take me with you, wife. How will she none? Doth she not give us thanks? Is she not proud? Doth she not count her blest,Unworthy as she is, that we have wroughtSo worthy a gentleman to be her bride?Juliet begins to try to explain but he dismisses it. How, how, chop logic! Lord Capulets anger increases very quickly. He echoes her words mimicking her explanations. He makes it very clear that he is disgusted in her. He uses language that refers to her as an animal. But fettle your fine joints he gets into an angry flow of insults t hat he hurls at her continuously. He uses repetition and alliteration, he threatens her, saying, I will make you go if you dont, and if you dont go I will disown you. Lady Capulet is shocked at how angry he is and she tries to intervene. Lord Capulet takes no notice of her and just ignores her. Juliet pleads to be heard out but he will not listen to her. He is on a tirade and just continues to throw insults at her, more every time that sh e tries to speak. His lines are full of abuse and orders, he is frightening and threatening. He uses three imperatives that mean the same thing, but it makes the speech flow better.Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch!I tell thee what: get thee to church o Thursday,Or never after look me in the face:Speak not, reply not, do not answer me;My fingers itch. Wife, we scarce thought us blestThat God had lent us but this only child; But now I see this one is too much,And that we have a curse in having her.Out on her, hilding! The nurse tries to calm him down and tries to defend Juliet with a brave outburst even though she is horrified. Lord Capulet turns on to the Nurse instead, and he hurls insults at the Nurse instead. Lord Capulet is irrational because he is so angry. Finally he has no other witty remarks so he has one last huge rant at Juliet. It is jagged and broken up. There are mostly single syllable words and it is choppy. He creates a picture of a perfect Paris, and then co ntrasts him to Juliet. He mimics Juliet so as to humiliate her. There are again, more orders and more commands.

Operation Market Garden Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Operation Market Garden - Essay Example The basis of the attack was the stunning and unanticipated victory of Operation Overboard of June 1944 as well as in the battle for Normandy. General Eisenhower the absolute allied commander, had evaluated the combat power of the German forces and approved the operation, risky as it was. The allies’ alleged that the German forces were so demoralized and jumbled, thus could not withstand further attacks. Eisenhower strategized to attack the German forces along the whole front and eventually end the war (Schultz 20). The operation Market Garden failed mainly due to planners assumptions. The Allies got into a near dilemma in Normandy after the great success as they were exhausted and required some time to reorganize themselves. Deficiency of material supplies nearly brought the operation to a halt. Another setback was when the allies they anticipated collapse of the German forces. They therefore, predicted the war was coming into a conclusion. Many commandants now put their focus on the probable promotions they would get due to this achievement. Another reason was that the Germans had reorganized themselves by early September. German forces had an advantage since the terrain they had to defend was small which enhanced communication (Schultz 26). The consequences of the failure of the Operation Market Garden were include, it demoralized the allies, which prolonged the war. In addition, the allies suffered losses where 10% officers were killed and 50% captured while several others were critically injured. Eisenhower and Montenegro also suffered public scrutiny (Schultz

Victorian society Essay Example for Free

Victorian society Essay The Importance of Being Earnest, subtitled, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People is a comedy of manners whereby Oscar Wilde rebukes the Victorian aristocracy for their social issues that seemingly prioritise the most trivial of things such as style and appearance above those of true significance such as. Wilde further achieves this by incorporating elements such as farce and melodrama in order to highlight their senseless main concerns. Wilde portrays the act of â€Å"Being Earnest† as being in opposing to its definition as having features of dishonesty and false morality, with one of the main characters Algernon stating that â€Å"The truth is rarely pure and never simple†. Wilde’s first satirical attack in the play is marriage. Algernon is shown to perceive marriage to be a business deal as opposed to the projected illusion of it as described in the play as being based on mutual feelings of love (evidence – Ceclily or Gwendolen). This is evidenced by Algernon’s sharply comical and paradoxical epigrams in response to his best friend Jack Worthing’s admittance of wanting to propose to Algernon’s own ward Gwendolen he states: â€Å"I thought you had come up for pleasure? I call that business. † Wilde is seemingly satirising concept of marriage presenting it to be a legal contract between consenting families of similar social class and fortunes; Baxley comments â€Å"Wilde shows us how the upper class does not marry for love or happiness but for convenience and social standing†. )Algernon views marriage in an unorthodox way, unlike the expectations of modern day now. He views it as a disease, one that to be bearable needs an escape: â€Å"Nothing will induce me to part with Bunbury, and if you ever get married†¦ you will be very glad to know Bunbury. A man who marries without knowing Bunbury has a very tedious time of it. † ‘Bunbury’ (who is he) is a direct metaphor for Algernon’s deceit and escape from social expectation. He is a fictitious person; one that Algernon suggests is needed in general life but indeed emphasises that this is the case most particularly when one is married. Algernon disregards Jack’s confidence that once he finds love he will no longer needs a ‘Bunbury’[a]. On one level the exchange merely is a continuation of the long running marriage gag of the Victorian notion of â€Å"marriage bliss† in an era where the English aristocracy was dominant and superior, and far removed even from the British middle class. This would in turn amplify the humorous situation through Wilde’s blatant social criticism-through the ‘Bunbury’ double entendre to the middle class audience in particular. Nevertheless, it also brings to light a darker subtext, one were Algernon insinuates that all husbands in Victorian society have and need a ‘Bunbury’ thus satirising the moral values by highlighting the fact that aristocratic meaning as long as they kept within the appearance of propriety, they could lead a double life and avoid responsibility but still keep upmost respect from society. Consequently, Oscar Wilde satirises duty and respectability simultaneously with the notion of marriage in Victorian society by demeaning their importance. Wilde could be said to be suggesting that their ‘duty’ is a pun (with reference to the title of the play) and in fact the aristocracy duty is more so simply a title that entails a need for pity as opposed to awe. Perhaps this is purposely done as such a suggestion to a Victorian audience would have been deemed an outrageous concept even to the extent of offence but is accepted due to the comedic light-heartedness and infantile manner in which it is presented; through Algernon’s unrealistic approach to life and love. His ignorance and foolishness, contributes to the satirical nature of the play but yet in keeping with the comedy genre due to the melodramatic and foolish aspects of his character for example: â€Å"She will place me next Mary Farquhar, who always flirts with her husband across the dinner-table. That is not very pleasant The amount of women in London who flirt with their own husbands is perfectly scandalous. It looks so bad. It is simply washing one’s clean linen in public†. This statement highlights the fact that Algernon recoils at the very thing that society values. His offence that the women he will be seated with flirt only with their husband and no one else evidences this. The importance of marriage instead is subverted and can be seen as simply a stipulation and social expectation that comes with the responsibilities of being in the upper class a view, which is seen as trivial and unimportant as the characters mainly view marriage as a social tool.

Biological Terrorism Essay -- Terror Terrorists Science Essays

Biological Terrorism I. CATASTROPHIC TERRORISM The date is April 24, 2005. The time is approximately 8:30 am. Somewhere on the New York City subway system a briefcase sits, apparently forgotten. Inside the briefcase, an electronic oscillator flips over, marking the passage of thirtieth minute since its owner abdicated. In the busy subway station no one notices the small hissing noise that is produced as an odorless, tasteless aerosol is slowly released into the air. Within minutes, the pathogen contained in the gas has spread throughout the station, and New York has unwittingly played host to the first recorded incidence of bioterrorism. The first symptoms appear nearly a week later. At first, victims believe they are suffering from the flu, but symptoms quickly progress from fever, rigors and headache to severe chest pain, irregular heartbeat and pustular eruptions. In the absence of treatment, nearly all those infected die within two weeks of the onset of symptoms. 1 Could this really happen? In the above case, glanders (Burkholderia mallei), a pathogen which normally strikes horses and mules, is released by a terroristic individual or group. Glanders was specifically chosen because of its virulence, high mortality rate, stability in aerosol, and ease of cultivation. When symptomatic individuals first arrive, accurate diagnosis will be unlikely; glanders is extremely rare in humans, and it is unlikely that medical personnel will have experience with the disease. Further complicating diagnosis, the pathogen does not appear in blood cultures until the victim is near death. Once diagnosed, medical personnel must take precautions to prevent person-to-person transmissio... ...st accessed 20 November 2000 Clinton, William J. Motivational Leadership Essay

Effective leadership has a tremendous impact on the success of an organization. Darling & Heller (2011) infers that â€Å"with regard to individuals in leadership roles, their thoughts and feelings, fundamentally based on attitudes, thereby also control the levels of organizational success and every other aspect of an organizational leader’s arena of endeavor† (p. 9). Achieving optimal organizational performance is very much so dependent on the effectiveness of that organization’s leaders. Five topics interrelated to leadership effectiveness will be addressed in this paper. (1) Feedback works for leadership and tell why you think it could be beneficial. (2) Present an overview of the Contingency Theory of Leadership effectiveness to include Situational Leadership II. (3) Share some ways that you as a leader could lead your company in being socially responsible and creating an ethical organization. (4) Provide a brief analysis of empowerment; be certain to include the relationship between delegation and empowerment. (5) Discuss how leaders can foster teamwork within a group. All of these topics and/or concepts are essential aspects to achieving high levels of quality, roductivity and satisfaction within an organization. The concept of 360-degree Feedback is to formally evaluate an organization’s leaders through feedback from individuals that work closely with those leaders (e. g. subordinates, colleagues, direct supervisors, other superiors, suppliers and/or customers). According to Dubrin (2010), 360-degree Feedback is also referred to as multisource or multirater feedback, and is systematically derived from a full sampling of parties who directly interact with the leader (p. 110). One particular method for organizations to easure leadership effectiveness through the 360-degree Feedback concept is to set up a system utilizing the internet or the organization’s intranet. That system should be based on the attributes that organization deems to be the most significant and valuable. The 360-degree Feedback is of great benefit to leaders in providing them insight into the effectiveness of their behaviors and styles. The feedback mainly serves for developmental purposes (behaviors, attitudes, and styles), and not for the purposes of evaluating the leader’s performances. The 360-degree Feedback not only benefits the ndividual leaders, but it also is a vital component to the organization, as a whole. Organizations benefit from 360-degree feedback instrument in the following ways: (a) individual performance improvement, (b) impact on business goals, and (c) impact on organizational culture (Rehbine-Zentis, 2007, p. 160). The Contingency Theory of Leadership is the assumption that a leader’s ability to lead is contingently based on various situational factors, internally and externally. The following are various factors that could greatly influence a leader’s effectiveness within heir organization: the capabilities of the workforce, the culture within the organization, and the competiveness of market. Leaders who are have been highly effective within one organization, may not deliver that same effectiveness within a different organization. An important perspective on implementing contingency leadership is that the leader must be flexible enough to avoid adhering to old ideas that no longer fit the current circumstances or situation (Dubrin, 2010, p. 133). I can definitely see the validity of the theory in reference to my own experiences in previous leadership positions. It is absolutely about he ability to successfully and effectively adapt to different organizational environments. Like the Contingency Theory of Leadership, the Situational Leadership II style is a contingency leadership approach that is solely based on the theory that there is no one particular best style of leadership that fits all situations. This leadership style focuses mainly on the capabilities or behaviors of individuals and/or groups that one leads. Blanchard (1997) asserts, â€Å"Situational Leadership II advocates that the best leaders provide the amount and kind of direction and support which best fits the developmental evel of the employee† (p. 38). As a leader, I can encourage my organization to focus on ethical business practices and social responsibility, beyond profit pursuit, based upon our strategic organizational goals, mission and vision statements. I would initially ensure that the organization’s environment was a positive, engaging culture conducive to intellectual development. Individuals within an organization invest about one-third of their time at work, a pleasant work environment increases the chances that their life will be enriched (Dubrin, 2010, p. 181). There would be a significance placed on competing fairly and onestly, not causing harm to others (internally/externally), and communicating truthfully. I would ensure that my organization is offering goods and services that are valuable and essential to consumers. We would be consistent in providing quality employment to individuals which would benefit them in providing for their families, in the forms of, paying them salaries/wages, offering quality health insurance and/or child care services, matching retirement plan contributions, etc. We would also benefit society in maintaining ethical practices in our financial obligations through paying taxes which elps fund education, support government, build highways, as well as provide funds to enhance our local, state and national public safety/defense systems. According to Forsyth (1997), â€Å"genuine changes to business practices have to be made in order to protect the environment† (p. 272). I would ensure that, as an organization, we were utilizing the most up-to-date technology and economic solutions to reduce or alleviate any environmental issues that we faced. My organization would take every possible precaution to not generate unnecessary waste and pollution through the improper onsumption of resources, as well as from the possible emission of toxic air pollutants caused by our manufacturing processes. The concept of empowerment involves a power transfer from higher levels of employees to lower levels of employees within an organization (Khalid & Sarwar, 2011). Leaders that utilize positive empowering practices with their employees are more likely to increase their organization’s productivity. When employees are given the opportunity to share in the responsibilities of their leaders and/or managers, they feel more powerful and valued. Empowerment is also advantageous to an organization, in respect to owering labor costs through the sharing of those managerial responsibilities with its lower-level employees. According to Dubrin (2010), leaders can promote empowerment within their organization through fostering initiatives and employee responsibility, linking work activities to the organization’s strategic goals, providing ample information to their employees, and by allowing group member or individual employees to choose their preferred method for meeting a goal (p. 205-206). One contributing factor to empowerment is the act of delegation which is more of a formal ssignment of tasks and responsibilities. Delegation, as well as, empowerment can be a very motivational tool which offers individuals the benefit of skill development. The bottom line is that both concepts represent the core principle of accountability. Teamwork is vital to an organization’s success. Being that teams consist of individuals with different backgrounds, beliefs, ideas and points of view, it is imperative that we always be respectful and embrace the rewards that diversity brings within the team. As leaders, we can foster teamwork within a group through providing team embers with clear descriptions of the team’s goals, mission and tasks, commanding performance commitment and excellence, providing direction and feedback, alleviating micromanagement practices, forming virtual teams utilizing e-leadership, and encouraging power sharing which ensures that each team member is being heard, taken seriously and treated respectfully (Dubrin, 2010). More importantly, encouraging teamwork and utilizing teams are essential in increasing an organization’s productivity and achieving cohesiveness throughout the organization. A leader’s ability to build ffective teams committed to organizational goals tops the list of priorities in todays dynamic business landscape (â€Å"Work at fostering teamwork on the job,† 2011). Teams can produce higher-quality solutions, as well as foster creativity and positive energy. Effective teams are capable of being more adept at solving difficult, complex problems than that of the organization’s â€Å"top-performing† individuals. Creating teams can also cause an increase in commitment, lower stress levels, diminish internal-competiveness, and promote flexibility in responding to the organization’s needs, in relation to, â€Å"business† changing.

South Africa And South African Literature Essay - 1487 Words

After the end of World War II, new ideals began to encroach on South Africa. One of these new ideas was Apartheid, the idea that the races should be separate. This idea quickly became practiced in everyday life and became included in the laws governing South Africa. As one can imagine this ideal also invaded the literature written in South Africa and South African writers. In order to develop Apartheid, the creation of an â€Å"other† was necessary, which established a type of â€Å"us† versus â€Å"them† mentality. The understood â€Å"us† that was created included all whites and the understood â€Å"them† that was created included coloreds, Asians, blacks, and everyone that wasn’t white. The ideological construction of the â€Å"other† as viewed through the South African texts, Heart of Darkness and Cry, The Beloved Country, was formed through ideas of superiority, dissociation, and eventually through racism. However, both South Afri can texts also include examples of awareness of oppression from the point of view of the in-group. In Albert Memmi’s text, The Colonizer and the Colonized, he discusses the formation of racism within a colonial and colonized society. He begins with â€Å"Colonial racism is built from three major ideological components: one, the gulf between the culture of the colonialist and the colonized; two, the exploitation of these differences for the benefit of the colonialist; three, the use of these supposed differences as standards of absolute fact† (Memmi, 71).
